Tortuna kyrka

About the church

Tortuna kyrka is a church building belonging to Tillberga parish in the Diocese of Västerås. The church is located in the community of Tortuna, about 10 kilometres north-east of Västerås. Until 1 January 2006 the church belonged to Tortuna parish, which was then merged into Tillberga parish.

The church was originally built in the 13th century, and a large part of the church's walls remain from that time. The exterior, however, largely dates from the decades around 1800, when the tower, among other things, was added. The nave contains two star vaults from the 15th century, which a few decades later were painted with some of the best-preserved wall paintings in the Diocese of Västerås, which have never been whitewashed over. Several of the church's medieval objects are now in the Swedish History Museum (Statens historiska museum), including a series of unique panel paintings that form a Passion cycle.
