Tillberga kyrka

About the church

Tillberga kyrka is a church building belonging to Tillberga parish in the Diocese of Västerås. The church lies in the middle of Tillberga kyrkby, about one kilometre north of the community of Tillberga.

The church was built in 1622 after a devastating fire had destroyed both the earlier, medieval church and a large part of Tillbergaby. Medieval walls may partly be incorporated in the present church. The exterior of the church is largely the result of rebuilding in the 19th century, while much of the appearance of the interior dates from the mid-20th century.

During an archaeological investigation of the church's foundation walls in 2014, bones were found that have been dated to around 1100, which indicates that there was already a church here at that time, probably built of wood. This is a remarkably great age for a church in the Diocese of Västerås.
