Svenskakyrkor.se gathers virtual tours of Sweden’s churches in one place, so that more people can see inside them.

Why the site exists

Many churches have been filmed or photographed in 360 degrees by parishes, photographers and companies. The tours are often scattered and hard to find. Here they are gathered together, with a page of its own for every church.

The site has two purposes. The first is accessibility: anyone who cannot get to a church, because of illness, age, disability or distance, should still be able to spend a moment there. The second is heritage. The churches hold art, craftsmanship and history from a thousand years. Virtual tours document how the interiors look today. We link to the tours but do not yet archive them ourselves; an archive of our own is an ambition for the future.

The story behind it

My mother was not particularly religious. Even so, the church was a place she liked to go to. She enjoyed simply being there, and the peace she found meant a great deal when life was hard.

We celebrated her 70th birthday at her bedside. By then she had been bedridden for three weeks. Seven months later, just before Christmas 2023, she passed away.

In her final months she was often anxious. I wish I had seen the possibility then of letting her visit the church virtually. Being able to look around the church might have given her a moment of peace, or something to be glad about.

That is one of the reasons I am building Svenskakyrkor.se. I want more people to have access to the places that mean something to them, even when their body sets limits.

How it works

The register covers 3,222 churches and chapels across the country. 956 of them have at least one registered virtual tour.
A virtual walk-through lets you move between several points in the church. Look around the church means that you can turn a picture taken from one spot.
The tours come from the parishes’ own websites, from photographers and from Google Maps. We show them from the original provider and state who made them.
If a church has no tour here, it only means that we have not registered one. Please let us know.
We are independent and not part of the Church of Sweden. Opening hours, bookings and questions about the churches are handled by the parishes.
