Romfartuna kyrka

About the church

Romfartuna kyrka is a church building in Romfartuna in the Diocese of Västerås. It is the parish church of Norrbo parish in the Västerås pastorate.

The unusually well-preserved church was built in the early 14th century, but archaeological investigations have shown that there was probably an older church on the same site, at least in the 13th century. Major changes took place in 1427, when the vaults were built and a porch was added, and in the 17th century, when the present tower, the spire and the Sparfvenfeldt burial chapel were built.

The church, one of the largest in the Diocese of Västerås, is characterised by Gothic style and is divided into three narrow, tall aisles, which creates a cathedral-like atmosphere. In the 1960s wall paintings in Byzantine style were uncovered which, both in age and appearance, are entirely unique north of Lake Mälaren. The church also contains several medieval wooden sculptures.
