Kungsåra kyrka

About the church

Kungsåra kyrka is a church building in the historical parish of Kungsåra in the Diocese of Västerås. It is the parish church of Kungsåra parish. The church, which stands on a hill in Kungsbyn, dates from 1753 and is probably the third church on the same site. Medieval masonry is incorporated in it. Nearby there are, among other things, a vicarage from around 1800 that has since been sold off, a parish clerk's cottage and a church school from 1908. According to one account, the first church here was built by King Erik Eriksson. The exterior of the church has largely retained its 18th-century appearance, while the interior is strongly marked by later alterations, most recently in the mid-20th century.

From Kungsåra kyrka comes what is regarded as Sweden's oldest piece of furniture, the so-called Kungsårabänken (the Kungsåra bench), which is now in Historiska museet (the Swedish History Museum).
