Ängsö kyrka

Ängsö kyrka is a church building on the island of Ängsön in the Diocese of Västerås. It is the parish church of Kungsåra parish.

The church was built around 1340 at the request of its patron Nils Abjörnsson and is very well preserved from that time. It is one of the finest churches of the High Middle Ages and has no direct equivalents, but, size aside, it can rival lavish monastery churches and Uppsala domkyrka. It is one of the best-preserved medieval private churches and one of the oldest country churches in Sweden built entirely of brick. Inside the church there are six original brick vaults, painted with highly sophisticated and completely unique wall paintings, including Sweden's oldest depiction of the national coat of arms, Tre kronor.

The church's furnishings include a baptismal font from around 1200, a saint's cabinet with an Anna Selbdritt (Saint Anne with the Virgin and Child) from the 15th century and one of the country's best-preserved 18th-century organs.

The church is part of the area of national interest for cultural heritage conservation, Ängsö [U 27], where the justification reads: ”Manor landscape with a monumental castle building, extensive parkland and the medieval estate church belonging to the castle”.
