Kärrbo kyrka

About the church

Kärrbo kyrka is a church building belonging to Kungsåra parish in the Diocese of Västerås. The church lies on a gentle south-facing slope in the church village of Kärrbo, about 10 kilometres southeast of Västerås.

The church was built in the 13th century and was rebuilt and extended in the 15th century. Apart from the burial chapel of Jesper Nilsson Cruus from the 1630s, the church has retained its medieval proportions ever since, and despite later repairs and alterations, in which the windows, among other things, were enlarged in stages, the church retains its medieval character both externally and internally. Among the older furnishings are a baptismal font from the 13th century, an altarpiece shrine from the 15th century, when the church interior's fragmentarily preserved wall paintings were also made, and a pulpit from the 17th century.
