About the church

Skerike kyrka (pronounced [schæ'rke]) is a church building belonging to Skerike parish in the Diocese of Västerås.

The church in Skerike is one of the oldest in the Västerås area, originally built around 1200 but rebuilt several times since. The most recent major rebuilding took place in the 1870s, when the tower was added. The medieval origins can be seen, among other things, in the blind arcading on the east gable, the steep roof, fragments of wall paintings and an altar shrine. The church also has an organ façade from the 17th century, which is the oldest preserved one in the Diocese of Västerås.

The church is part of the area of national interest for cultural heritage conservation Svartåns dalgång med Skultuna bruk [U 19], in which the medieval churches of Skerike and Skultuna are cited as expressions of the national interest. Next to the church there are, among other things, a former vicarage built in 1829 and a schoolhouse.
