About the church
Västerslättskyrkan (S:t Staffan) is a district church in Umeå City Parish in the Diocese of Luleå. The church lies in the centre of the Västerslätt district of Umeå.
The round church interior, whose circular plan shows influences from Italy, was formerly a Konsum store hall from 1957, designed by Sune Flök.
The building has a frame of cast concrete and a concrete-tile roof. The walls originally had no windows, to make room for shelving in the shop. The light was instead to come from above, from a glass lantern.
In autumn 1976 work began on the conversion and extension. The shop hall was clad in yellow brick and the goods entrance was glazed in. Walls and inner ceiling are white-rendered and the floor is laid with ceramic tiles. The church was consecrated on 4 September 1977. The architect for the conversion was Bertil Håkansson.
The freestanding bell tower is built of wood with a flat roof and has a bell cast by Bergholtz klockgjuteri (bell foundry) in Sigtuna.
