Bygdeå kyrka

About the church

Bygdeå kyrka is a church building in Bygdeå and the parish church of Bygdeå parish in the Diocese of Luleå. The church is one of the oldest stone churches in upper Norrland and was built in 1539. It stands by the Storbäcken stream, and it is probable that the present church, like the contemporary Backenkyrkan in Umeå, stands on the site of an older wooden church.

The chancel wall is adorned with an epitaph for Lieutenant Colonel Henrik von Walter, which King Karl XI had his court sculptor Burchard Precht make.

In the church interior there are three star vaults that probably date from 1539. The most richly designed vault is in the chancel. The freestanding bell tower dates from 1818.
