About the church

Sankta Birgitta kyrka is a church building in Nockeby in Bromma. It belongs to Västerled parish in the Diocese of Stockholm. The church is located a few hundred metres from the current terminus of the Nockeby tramway, Nockeby station. Construction of the church began in November 1960 on the site of the old terminus of the Nockeby tramway, and it was ready for consecration on 9 December 1962. The building process took place between 1960 and 1962, and the church was designed by the architect Rolf Bergh (1919-2005), while the landscape architect Gunnar Martinsson (1924-2012) was responsible for the grounds.

The land on which the church was built had previously been a turning loop for the trams, the former turning loop of line 12, with the stops then known as Källviken and Nockeby. The terminus at Nockeby had been inaugurated on 1 October 1929 and was then called Källviken. From Källviken station, which was an alighting stop, the line continued in a turning loop to Nockeby, which was a boarding stop. There were thus two stops in the turning loop at Nockeby. There was an alighting stop at Källviken. The tram then passed through the turning loop.
