About the church
Vadstena klosterkyrka is a church building in Vadstena. It was consecrated in 1430 and built in accordance with the instructions of Saint Birgitta as the abbey church of the adjacent Bridgettine monastery, but is now a parish church in the Diocese of Linköping in the Church of Sweden, belonging to Vadstena parish. Vadstena klosterkyrka is among the larger medieval church buildings in Sweden and, together with Vadstena slott (castle), dominates the town. Vadstena klosterkyrka is often called Blåkyrkan ("the Blue Church"), because the stone it is built of shimmers blue. In summer the abbey church is visited by 2500-3000 people every day. The abbey church has three stars in the Michelin Guide.
The abbey church began to be built in the late 14th century. Vadstena monastery was consecrated in 1384 by Bishop Nils Hermansson. The present church building was preceded by a wooden chapel, around which the present limestone church was erected. It was finally consecrated in 1430. Saint Birgitta's instructions for the building of the church described that the church should be of: "plain workmanship, humble and strong".
