At Smedby kyrka the sightlines of southern Öland and of the landscape begin to open up. To the east lies the alvar, and to the west the farmland stretching towards Kalmarsund. A small parish centre with a school and vicarage has formed by the church, and this is also where the country road heads south and the village street runs down to the villages by the sound.
