Augerums kyrka

About the church

Augerums kyrka is a church building in Augerum in the Diocese of Lund. It is the parish church of Lyckå parish. The church is situated beside the Lyckeby river, north of Karlskrona. According to legend, the old church is said to have collapsed into the Lyckeby river. During a particularly severe spring flood, when the river rose high enough, parts of the churchyard and the old church are said to have been swept into the water. This never happened, but children were frightened with this story for many years. Children from Kättilsmåla, for example, who came to Augerums kyrka for the end-of-term school ceremony, were told by their parents to sit far back near the church door, so as to be able to get out in time if the church should fall into the river again. Because of this tall tale, the small pool in the river below the church, just past the mill and the bridge, is called Klockegölen (the Bell Pool). According to legend, the bells of the old church lie at the bottom, and if you listen carefully you can still hear them ringing.
