About the church

Slottskyrkan is a church hall built in the 18th century in Stockholm Palace and was inaugurated on 8 December 1754, with the royal family at its head, at the same time as the palace itself, by King Adolf Fredrik and Queen Lovisa Ulrika. Naturally the court filled many rows of pews, but everyone who could find a place in the remaining pews was welcome.

The church is located in the eastern half of the palace's southern wing and occupies its whole width as well as two and a half storeys in height; it extends from the southern vault to the east gable of the wing. The entrance is from the southern vault, Slottsbacken 1. Slottskyrkan was created mainly to designs by the architects Nicodemus Tessin the Younger and Carl Hårleman in a mixture of Baroque and Rococo style. Hårleman also designed the church interior mainly according to the drawings of Tessin. Slottskyrkan has the same dimensions as the Rikssalen (the Hall of State). Slottskyrkan was designed in close accordance with the plans of Nicodemus Tessin the Younger, but through the contribution of his successor Carl Hårleman it has received a decoration marked by the ideals of French Rococo.
