Nykyrka kyrka

About the church

Nykyrka kyrka is a church building in the historical parish of Nykyrka in Nyköping Municipality. It belongs to Stigtomta-Vrena parish.

The church, originally an apse church, was built of fieldstone in the second half of the 12th century and then consisted of a rectangular nave, a narrower and longer chancel, and an apse in the east. The apse was demolished in the 1760s when the octagonal burial chancel was built. The church fell into serious disrepair and stood abandoned between 1814, when it was taken out of use, and 1926, when it was restored. It was reconsecrated in 1929 and now stands out as one of the most archaic churches in the diocese. The sacristy from 1767 is contemporary with the burial chancel. The belfry is, as a type, a reminder of the church's earliest period, even though the timber of the belfry has been renewed several times since. Beside the church stands a runestone (Sö 46).
