About the church
Norra Mellby kyrka is a church building in the church village of Norra Mellby, north-east of Sösdala. It belongs to Sösdala parish in the Diocese of Lund. The medieval church was completed around 1150. The church was extended in the 13th century and vaults were built in the 15th century, but the tower was not erected until 1917. The church has masonry walls and a gabled roof. On the north wall there is a wheel of life depicting the ages of man. The painting dates from the 13th or 14th century, which makes it special since Nordic medieval depictions of the ages of man are very rare; apart from this one, only one other example, in Ramsåsa kyrka, is known. In the chancel there is a stained-glass window from 1956 by the local-born Carl-Einar Andersson and in the nave one from 1984 by Erik Olson.
The medallion of the student choral society, depicting Otto Lindblad, has been in the church in Norra Mellby since 1956, where the legendary composer and choir leader was parish clerk. The medallion was sculpted by Professor Carl-Herman Hjortsjö.
Norra Mellby vicarage, together with the church and the other buildings, forms a characteristic parish centre.
