Karlstads domkyrka

About the church

Karlstads domkyrka is a church building situated on Tingvallaön in central Karlstad. It is the cathedral of the Diocese of Karlstad and the parish church of Karlstad Cathedral parish within the Church of Sweden.

The church was built in 1723–1730 by master mason Christian Haller, as a central-plan church in an austere Baroque style with heavy whitewashed walls of building stone and details in brick. Windows and openings are round-arched. A church tower was later added in the west, and the church took on more the character of a cruciform church. During the 19th century neoclassical elements were added.

The church has had cathedral status since 1647, when Queen Christina had the superintendency of Mariestad moved to Karlstad. The superintendent was replaced by a bishop in 1772, and since then Karlstads domkyrka has been the bishop's seat.
