Hjälsta kyrka was built at the end of the 15th century and is in large part the same as when it was built. The church stands on a hill and has beautiful high vaults – reportedly the highest in any country church between Stockholm and Stora Tuna in Dalarna.

About the church
Hjälsta kyrka is a medieval church building belonging to Lagunda parish in the Diocese of Uppsala. The church is located in the historic Hjälsta parish and stands on a juniper-covered hill a couple of kilometres inland from the northern tip of Hjälstaviken. Just outside the churchyard wall, on the north side, stands the bell tower, which was built in 1739-1740. The tower is clad in wooden panelling, has a shingle-covered cap and a weather vane that is a replica of a rusted-through weather vane from the 17th century. Of the two church bells, the great bell was cast in 1649 by Jorgen Putensen and the small bell was cast in 1727 by Eric Näsman.
