Edsbro kyrka

About the church

Edsbro kyrka is a medieval church building in Edsbro. The church is situated high up on a ridge and belongs to Edsbro-Ununge parish in Roslagens västra pastorate in the Diocese of Uppsala. Edsbro lies in Roslagen, about 15 kilometres north of Rimbo. In the north-western part of the churchyard wall there is an unusual lychgate from the 15th century with a so-called preaching hatch where itinerant preaching friars could speak to the people. The lychgate is built of rendered brick and rests on a base of fieldstone. Inside, the lychgate has a cross vault. In the southern part of the churchyard wall there was a lychgate that was pulled down in 1829. North-west of the church stands the belfry, which was built in the middle of the 17th century and was originally an open structure. Later - probably in 1747 - the belfry was clad in boarding and acquired its present form. The great bell from the 14th century is one of the oldest in Uppland. The small bell was cast in Stockholm in 1819 by Gerhard Horner. North of the church, inside the churchyard wall, there was a large burial mound which in the Middle Ages was probably used as an assembly mound. At the end of the 19th century the mound was excavated away.
