Vreta klosters kyrka

About the church

Vreta klosters kyrka is a church building in Vreta kloster parish (historical) and the parish church of Vreta kloster parish in Östergötland. It lies 10 kilometres north-west of Linköping and belongs to the Diocese of Linköping. The church was probably built as a royal or magnate's church, but came for a long period to belong to the neighbouring Vreta kloster (Vreta Abbey). At that time the church was divided by a grille into a monastic part and a parish part. In 1533 Gustav Vasa converted the abbey church into a Lutheran parish church.

The church is still used in the 2020s as a parish church within the Church of Sweden, with a service every Sunday.
