About the church
Viktoriakyrkan, also called Viktoriakapellet or Guvertsfjälls kapell, is a church building situated by the lake Överst-Juktan in the south-western part of Sorsele Municipality in Lapland. It lies in a very sparsely populated area, 80 kilometres from the community of Sorsele. A minor road passes near the church.
The initiative for the church was taken in 1935 by local residents in Juktådalen under the leadership of the priest in Ammarnäs, Göte Haglund. Its ultimate origin was that the Sámi man Johan Andersson Gran saw in a dream that a church should be raised on the meadow (gäran) Svallsgäran, cleared by the Swedish settler Svallsson. Johan Andersson Gran told Swedes and Sámi about this, among them people living near the other end of Överst-Juktan in Slätvik and Falträsk, who passed the dream on to Göte Haglund. Göte Haglund was struck by the thought of how important the simple Sámi chapels in Jillesnålle and Tärna had been for development in Vindeldalen and Umedalen, and he hoped for the same effect in Juktådalen. After the Guvertfjäll chapel association had been formed, Göte Haglund was commissioned to begin a fundraising campaign.
Svallsgäran was then sixty kilometres from the nearest road.
