About the church
Växjö domkyrka is a church building near Stortorget and Lake Växjösjön in central Växjö. It is the cathedral of the Diocese of Växjö and the parish church of Växjö stads- och domkyrkoförsamling (Växjö Town and Cathedral Parish) within the Church of Sweden.
Växjö domkyrka has medieval origins and, according to legend, was founded by Saint Sigfrid. Research shows, however, that construction of the church began towards the end of the 12th century, when it was built of natural stone as a single-aisled nave in Romanesque style, with a massive tower in the west. The site was originally a peninsula, before Lake Växjösjön was lowered in 1814.
During the 15th century the building was transformed into a hall church with a central nave and two side aisles. New elements of Gothic architecture were added, while brick replaced natural stone as the building material. After an extensive fire in 1740 the church was given a Neoclassical expression. The exterior has been greatly affected by the major renovations carried out in the 19th and 20th centuries. The two spires characterise the cathedral; they were first added in the 1580s but in their present form date from 1960.
