Västra Fågelviks kyrka

About the church

Västra Fågelviks kyrka is the parish church of Västra Fågelvik parish, Årjäng Municipality. The church is located on a headland by the strait between the northern and southern parts of Lake Foxen. The present stone church was built in 1856-1859, but replaced an older wooden church, probably of medieval origin. The location of the medieval church is not known with certainty.

The church is oriented in a north-south direction and consists of a rectangular nave, a projecting chancel to the south, an attached sacristy on the east side of the nave and a tower at the northern gable. The entrance is in the north via the ground floor of the tower and in the middle of the west side of the nave. The church was built in the typical neoclassical style of its time and is well preserved both outside and inside. The whitewashed walls are crowned by profiled mouldings and pierced by round-arched portal and window openings. Slightly projecting portal risalits have their own roof slopes. The church interior is covered by a coved ceiling. The chancel is lit by three tall, narrow window openings. Both the altar decoration and the pulpit are contemporary with the church building. The church was designed by the architect Albert Törnqvist.
