Västerljungs kyrka

About the church

Västerljungs kyrka lies in Västerljung, seven kilometres north-west of Trosa. It belongs to Trosa parish in the Diocese of Strängnäs.

The oldest walls of Västerljungs kyrka date from the 12th and 13th centuries. Over the centuries the exterior of the church has been altered several times. The most recent occasion was in 1889, when the tower received its final appearance, with its crown of brick with recessed blind niches in the wall surface after medieval models.

1719 was a catastrophic year for Västerljungs kyrka. The Russians ravaged the parish and, among other things, burned the church. The roof and all the furnishings were destroyed, as well as all the documents that told of the church's earlier history.

The medieval vaults give the interior its character. The plaster on them has been removed. The furnishings that were saved from the Russian ravages of 1719 have disappeared. An altarpiece from the latter half of the 15th century is nevertheless to be found in the church. The altarpiece was a gift from Ösmo kyrka after the fire of 1719. The pulpit was made in the 1830s, while the altar rail and the pews were added in 1954. The organ gallery dates from the same year.
