About the church
Svansteins kyrka is a church building in Svanstein in the Diocese of Luleå. It is the parish church of Övertorneå parish. Svanstein was originally the name of an ironworks and was created by combining the surname of the ironworks owner (Abraham Steinholtz) with that of his wife (Sara Svanberg). As a result of the Treaty of Fredrikshamn in 1809, when the parishes in the Torne Valley were divided, a church was built in Turtola on the eastern side of the Torne älv river. The aim was to prevent the population on the Swedish side from turning to the church in the now Finnish (Russian) area at Turtola. To this end the Riksdag allocated 5,000 kronor for the construction of a chapel in the Swedish village of Turtola, which later came to be called Svanstein.
