The church stands on a rocky hill, "Norra bergen", just north of the centre of Askersund. It is built in the Neoclassical style and was completed in 1780. Nearby there are both cultural-historical environments and the water tower, recently converted into apartments.

About the church
Sofia Magdalena kyrka is a church building belonging to Askersund-Hammar parish in the Diocese of Strängnäs. The church is located in Askersund and was built in 1778–1780 in stone after the earlier timber church was destroyed in the devastating fire of 1776. The architect is Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz.
The church has a Neoclassical interior that has well preserved its Gustavian character.
In 1868 the present altarpiece, altar rail and pulpit were made by Johan Zacharias Blackstadius.
The chancel carpet is a high-quality modernist work, created by Randi Fisher.
