Skurups kyrka

About the church

Skurups kyrka is a church building on the outskirts of Skurup, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It belongs to Skurup parish in the Diocese of Lund.

The church was built in the 12th century by an unknown builder. It was built with an apse and chancel, and constructed in the form of a Roman basilica (a kind of hall building) with thick walls of fieldstone and limestone. In the 14th century it was vaulted. In the middle of the 16th century an extension was made to the west. The tower has a stepped gable. In 1856–1857 the transept arms were added under the direction of Carl Georg Brunius. Only the chancel, the apse and parts of the nave remain from the 12th century.
