About the church
Skogs kyrka is a church building in the urban area of Skog in Söderhamn Municipality. The church, consecrated in 1805, belongs to Skog parish in the Diocese of Uppsala.
In connection with the renovation in 1951 the church was given fresco paintings by Erik Abrahamson: partly Jesus on the cross and Moses with the Tablets of the Law in the nave; partly four of Jesus' parables in the apse of the chancel. During the renovation in 1987 a new freestanding altar was added, made by the cabinetmaker Kaj Andersson in Löten, Skog, and designed by the architect Uno Söderberg.
In 1912 the so-called Skogbonaden, a tapestry, was found in the church. It dates from the 13th century and is kept in the Swedish History Museum in Stockholm, but since 2000 there has been a copy in the church. Among the church's older possessions may be mentioned a medieval censer, a medieval church chest and a copy of the Gustav Vasa Bible, printed in 1541.
The origin of the church.
The parish in Skog had for many years needed a larger church. The old one, made of wood, was too small despite several extensions. It was many years before sufficient funds had been collected for a church building, since the parish was only 25 mantal (a historical land-tax unit).
