About the church
Skara domkyrka is a church building located in central Skara. It is the cathedral of the Diocese of Skara and the parish church of Skara domkyrkoförsamling (Skara Cathedral Parish) within the Church of Sweden. The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Mary.
The oldest parts of the church are the crypt from the 12th century, while the chancel and nave date from the 13th and 14th centuries and were built in the High Gothic style. The church underwent extensive renovations in the 19th century and the 1940s.
The Diocese of Skara is the first diocese in Sweden. It was founded in 1014 in Husaby, but the episcopal see was moved to Skara as early as the 1050s. Under Adalvard the Elder, who was bishop of the Diocese of Skara in 1060–1064, construction of the church of Saint Mary was begun.
Ulrica Fritzson has been Bishop of the Diocese of Skara since 2024.
