About the church
Skanörs kyrka is a church building in Skanör. It belongs to Skanör-Falsterbo parish, formerly Skanör parish, in the Diocese of Lund. Also known as S:t Olofs kyrka, since it is dedicated to Saint Olaf.
The church dates from the 13th century, although remains of an even older church, possibly from the 12th century, have been found near the church's north wall in archaeological excavations.
The church was extended in stages during the Middle Ages. In the 14th century it was extended to the west and the south tower was built, and in the 15th century the old chancel was replaced by a new one with high vaults and Gothic windows. During this rebuilding the church also acquired its crypt. Together with Lunds domkyrka, Västra Ingelstads kyrka and Dalby kyrka, it is one of only four churches in Skåne to have a crypt.
The most recent renovation took place in 1889–1892, when, among other things, the floor was relaid with cement, the stairs up to the pulpit were painted, the pulpit was varnished, a stove was installed, three windows were inserted by the gallery, and new doors were put up at the western and southern entrances and closed off under the gallery. For example, the gravestones on the church floor were moved out and placed along the outer walls of the church.
