About the church
Sankta Anna Underjordskyrka is an underground church room located at a depth of 90 metres in Kristineberg, Lycksele parish, dating from 1990. It is one of several underground churches in the world; for example, there is one in Poland. The church is ecumenical.
The history of the church began on 29 November 1946, when, after a mine blast, a bright, Christ-like image, two metres long, appeared in the rock wall to the miner Albert Jönsson. The blast had been carried out the previous day by Johan Olofsson, and the place was stope number 6 in the A ore body, 107.6 metres underground. The image of Christ that met Albert Jönsson was silver-coloured and resembled sericite quartzite. Other people working in the mine also saw the image, and so the mine foreman finally summoned a photographer to document the event.
The image was photographed and spread, with the story, in newspapers, and people from all over the world made pilgrimages to the mine to see it. Getting there was troublesome, as visitors had to descend to a depth of 120 metres and then climb up to the site on a ladder, but this did not deter the visitors, who arrived in great numbers.
