Sankt Lars kyrka

About the church

Sankt Lars kyrka is a whitewashed stone church building in central Linköping, Östergötland County. It is situated on Storgatan between Stora torget and the Stångån. The church belongs to Sankt Lars parish and Linköping Cathedral Pastorate. The church was dedicated to Saint Lawrence. Historically the parish consisted of the countryside outside the town boundary, even though the church stood inside the town on land belonging to the cathedral parish. The boundary with the cathedral parish was changed in 1961 and now runs along Klostergatan, one block west of Sankt Lars kyrka.

The lower four storeys of the church tower date from the Middle Ages. The nave, chancel and sacristy were built in 1801 and are noted for their excellent acoustics. The church is often used for concerts. The marble chancel wall was installed during the renovation in 1957. An archaeological excavation was also carried out then, and in a cellar beneath the church floor one can today see remains of the oldest walls.
