About the church
Sankt Ansgars kyrka is a church building in Uppsala in the Diocese of Uppsala. It stands on Studentvägen, in the district of Kungsgärdet. It is run by the independent Sankt Ansgar Foundation within the Church of Sweden and belongs to the Diocese of Uppsala. The first sod of the church was turned by Archbishop Gunnar Hultgren. It was consecrated on the Feast of the Annunciation in 1961 by Bishop Johannes Sandegren, on behalf of the archbishop. The church was dedicated to the missionary Ansgar. After a rebuilding, the church was reconsecrated in 1997 by Archbishop K.G. Hammar.
The interior of the church is dominated by a crucifix in the central aisle, made by Sven-Bertil Svensson, and an icon of Christ on the chancel wall by Erland Forsberg, who has also made several further icons, placed on the pillars of the church. The icon of Christ is flanked on each side by an icon depicting the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist respectively.
Next to the church stands Ansgarsgården, consisting of two apartment buildings housing student accommodation.
