About the church
Mora kyrka is a church building in Mora. It belongs to Mora parish in the Church of Sweden, where it is also the parish church, and is part of the Diocese of Västerås. The church is situated on a narrow isthmus in the northern part of the urban area of Mora, between the north-western end of Siljan and the Österdalälven.
The church, which has both a belfry and a tower, has Zorngården as its nearest neighbour to the west. Nearby there is also an old vicarage of cultural-historical interest ("prostgården"), and by the church is also the finish line of the Vasaloppet.
A village first grew up around the church, later the market town of Morastrand and the urban area of Mora, owing to its position on the then increasingly important trade routes along the Oreälven and the Österdalälven.
The reason the church is so large and richly decorated is that in the Middle Ages the whole of northern Dalarna except Orsa belonged to the parish. Since then, more and more communities have broken away to form parishes of their own and have built churches of their own.
In the Middle Ages the church was dedicated to Saint Michael, which is why this archangel also appears in the coat of arms of Mora Municipality.
