Marielundskyrkan

About the church

Marielundskyrkan is a church in Östersund parish in the Diocese of Härnösand. The church is located in the Odenslund district on the southern edge of the more central parts of Östersund. Marielundskyrkan is a three-aisled basilica built of wood. The nave is likewise three-aisled, with vaults and walls clad in blue-glazed pine panelling.

The church's altar silver and baptismal font were made by the silversmith Kerstin Öhlin-Lejonklou. Planning of the new church in the Marielund residential area began in 1964. The following year a plot of land was purchased for the purpose. The church was built to designs by the architect Tore Virke and was completed in 1969. The architect's aim was to give the wooden church a simple and everyday character that could stand in contrast to the "radical formal language" of modernism.
