About the church
Mariakyrkan, formerly the Poorhouse Church (Fattighuskyrkan), is a church building and a parish hall located in the district of Stampen, in the eastern part of central Gothenburg. It belongs to Gothenburg Cathedral Parish and the Church of Sweden.
The church and the adjacent Mariagården are the parish hall of the Cathedral Parish. In 1726-1836 the parish had the name the City Poorhouse together with Gothenburg's General Labour and Correction Institution. Around 1825 the annex Gothenburg Spinning House Parish was incorporated, and in 1836-1885 the name was Gothenburg Poorhouse Parish.
