Månsarps kyrka

About the church

Månsarps kyrka is a church building in Jönköping Municipality. It belongs to Månsarp parish in the Diocese of Växjö.

The oldest church known in Månsarp was a medieval wooden church. It was followed by a church that was completed in 1714, also a wooden church and located near the present one. Outside it was clad in shingles and painted red. The roof was covered with tiles, and inside the church was decorated with paintings executed by Johan Kinnerus in the 1740s. The site is now known as the deserted churchyard, because the old churchyard wall still remains.

In 1846 the parish meeting decided that a new church should be built. The old one was by then dilapidated and was considered too small. In 1853 the new church was completed, built in late Neoclassical style, large, bright and airy. The consecration was performed in 1857 by Bishop Christopher Isac Heurlin.

Over the years the church has undergone a number of renovations. The most recent interior renovation, in 1977–1978, was extensive, including a rebuilt chancel, assembly room and cloakroom as well as a new colour scheme. The most recent exterior renovation took place in 1994 and included, among other things, a new roof and in part also a new colour scheme.
