About the church
Leksands kyrka is a church building in Leksand. It is the parish church of Leksand parish in the Diocese of Västerås. The church is one of the largest country churches in Sweden, with room for 2,300 people. It is also the oldest of the churches around Lake Siljan. The church is set high up at the far end of the northern point where the river Österdalälven flows out of Lake Siljan. The bells hang in the bell tower outside the church.
Among other things, the women's aprons (majder) made it possible, in combination with the skirt, to tell which Sunday or feast day of the church year it was. In earlier times many people travelled to church by boat, village by village. They landed just below the church – beyond the sand slopes – at the place known as Barkdal.
Vilhelm Moberg calls the grounds of Leksands kyrka "one of Sweden's most beautiful churchyards".
Among others, Hugo Alfvén, Lille Bror Söderlund, Rune Lindström, Bengt Rundgren and Åke Lassas are buried in the churchyard.
Via Sacra is the name of the cross-shaped path, made of boulders of different rock types from Dalarna, that starts from the churchyard. It was created by the parish's rector, provost Fredrik Lautmann.
