Klara kyrka

About the church

Klara kyrka, or Sankta Clara kyrka, is a church in Norrmalm in central Stockholm. Before 1989 it was the parish church of Klara parish, which was then incorporated into Stockholm Cathedral Parish, and the church is now a district church, with an EFS association (Evangeliska Fosterlandsstiftelsen) responsible for its activities. The name of the church comes from the convent that formerly stood on the site, Sankta Klara kloster.

Construction of the church building began in the second half of the 16th century under the Dutch master builder Hendrik van Huwen, and since then many architects have been involved in the further design of the building, among them Willem Boy, Göran Josuae Adelcrantz, Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz, Carl Hårleman and, most recently (1963–1965), Artur von Schmalensee. With its 116-metre-high tower, Klara kyrka is the second tallest church in Sweden and Scandinavia, after Uppsala domkyrka.
