About the church
Kalix kyrka (also Nederkalix kyrka) is a church building in Kalix, near the river Kalix älv and European route E4. It is the parish church of Kalix parish in the Diocese of Luleå. The church is the northernmost medieval church in Sweden, and probably the oldest church in Norrbotten. In the Middle Ages the Kalixälven flowed into the sea beside the church site. Land uplift has since moved the river mouth almost 10 kilometres to the south-east. In 1472 the church was visited by Archbishop Jakob Ulvsson Örnfot, who consecrated the altarpiece and issued a letter of indulgence in Kalix kyrka. The letter is preserved in a copy from the 17th century.
