Gryts kyrka

About the church

Gryts kyrka is a church in the historical parish of Gryt, between Södertälje and Katrineholm in Gnesta Municipality. The church belongs to Daga parish in the cathedral deanery of the Diocese of Strängnäs.

The oldest parts date from the 12th century, and around 1300 the nave was extended and the sacristy was added. The beautiful Romanesque vaults date from the 15th century. Not until 1778 was the church completed in its present external form, through a considerable extension to the south, called "nykyrkan" (the new church). At the same time the church's older porch, built in the 15th century, was demolished. The present tower cap was built in 1769. During a restoration in the 1890s to designs by Erik Josephson, the earlier closed pews were replaced by open pews with curved ends. Through a restoration in 1937–1938 under the direction of Martin Westerberg the church received its present interior.

A rune stone (Sö 11) raised by the west wall of the nykyrkan bears the inscription "Fröbjörn and Gudrun, raised the stone here in memory of their brave son Rodmund, Rodger's brother. May God help his spirit. Öpir carved the runes…". The rune stone lay in the entrance of the old porch and later as a threshold stone in the present south portal.
