About the church
Duveds kyrka is a church in Duved, western Jämtland, the parish church of Åre parish in the Diocese of Härnösand. Duveds kyrka has 900 seats (of which 250 in its gallery on three sides); the building is a wooden church in Neo-Gothic style that resembles a cathedral both outside and inside and is therefore called "the cathedral among the mountains". It was built at the beginning of the 1890s under the name Åre nya kyrka (which it was called until the mid-1980s, although the name may still occur), after three decades of preparatory work, and was built because the medieval stone church Åre gamla kyrka in Åre (9 kilometres to the east) was both considered too small and had begun to fall into disrepair. With the construction, a new parish meeting house (sockenstuga) and vicarage were also added, forming an ecclesiastical centre more centrally located in the historical Åre parish, even though a decade later the parish had the old church renovated and preserved – after which the two churches came to complement each other.
Besides its church activities, the building is also one of the county's most popular concert venues, sometimes supplemented by exhibitions and plays.
