About the church

The Brahe burial chancel (Braheska gravkoret), or Tidökoret, in Jäders kyrka lies directly adjoining the nave of the church, on its south side, about ten metres west of the church's main chancel. The chancel was completed in 1659. It forms an architectural counterpart to the sacristy.

It was commissioned by Margareta Brahe, who, as is known from her will of 1661, had wanted to have her final resting place here. This did not come to pass, however, because through her third marriage in 1661 to Landgrave Fredrik II of Hessen-Homburg (1633-1708) she came to move to Germany. She is buried in Homburg together with her husband.

The burial chancel is separated from the nave by a heavy wrought-iron grille. It was originally made in 1645 for Bengt Bengtsson Oxenstierna's burial place in Riddarholmskyrkan in Stockholm, but was moved in 1659 to the burial chancel in Jäders kyrka, which had by then been completed. It was made by the ornamental blacksmith Göran Möller. In the same year, 1659, Bengt Bengtsson Oxenstierna's coffin was also moved from Riddarholmskyrkan to Jäder.

There are six coffins in the Brahe burial chancel.
