About the church
Alva kyrka belongs to Alva, Hemse and Rone parish on Gotland. The church is built of sandstone and the oldest surviving part is the chancel with apse, which was built around 1200. In the early 14th century it was planned to build a large tower in the west, but this was never completed. The old Romanesque south portal was moved to the north side at the same time. The church was restored in 1953–1954 following proposals by the architect Gösta Wiman.
